The fight card for “NAAFS: Combat Challenge 21″ was recently released, and it features many of the area’s top up-and-coming amateur fighters.
Notably, Strong Style Fight Team’s Dustin Wolf (3-0) will return to action for the first time in nearly a year when he takes on an opponent to be named. Wolf will look to build on a win over Aleksey Itunin as he attempts to crack the into the top five rankings in the NAAFS welterweight division. Training with some of Ohio’s elite fighters at Strong Style, Wolf has finished all three of his opponents and could be a dark horse in the NAAFS title picture come fall.
At featherweight, David Graf (4-4) will look for an opportunity to start stringing wins together in a deep 145-pound division as he takes on Pittsburgh’s Luke Burdette (3-4) in another featured bout. Both fighters are looking for a signature win to keep up with some of the top fighters in the NAAFS.
A pivotal bout in the NAAFS women’s division will also take place, as top-ranked fighter Allanna Jones (4-2) takes on contender Ashley Hawkins (3-1). Both women are looking for a breakout performance, and with the NAAFS as a leader in amateur women’s MMA in the country, both have a great opportunity to do so.
Zach Sutek (6-5) will return to the cage for the first time since 2010, but the Instigator lightweight won’t have an easy task, as he’s set to take on Evolve MMA’s Josh Kallai (3-2) in a pivotal bout for the 155-pound rankings.
Speaking of rankings, Pennsylvania’s AJ Bosley (5-2) will look to secure his second place ranking at lightweight when he takes on 2011 semifinalist Kenny Jackson (8-5). Bosley is riding a three-fight winning streak, while Jackson is looking for an opportunity to string together wins to get another crack at NAAFS gold come October.
But perhaps the night’s most pivotal bout could be in the featherweight division. With Wes Hanson and Dominic Mazzotta already having put on impressive showings at 145 pounds, those two fighters appear to be on a collision course toward the title at the end of the year. But two fighters who would like an opportunity to be thrown in that mix are Eric Gifford (4-1) and Russ Brletrick (7-5). Gifford comes in riding a three-fight winning streak, while 2011 featherweight runner-up Brletrick is trying to erase the memory of a second loss to Mark Cherico.
“NAAFS: Combat Challenge 21″ takes place on July 14 at Chapparrells Community Center in Akron, Ohio.
